I went to my very first NHL game last Friday night, which was about time for a Canadian citizen who has lived in Vancouver, Toronto, and Calgary, though to be honest, I don’t think I would have ever gone if I wasn’t given a ticket. My theory is that a person becomes a sports fan one of two ways. One, by playing the sport, or two, by experiencing the sport through live games. With hockey I was zero for two. It’s not the easiest of sports to watch on tv – it’s hard to follow the puck and hard to see players’ faces to determine whether they’re hot – so my interest in it was way below the national average.
Going to a Canucks vs. Flames game and sitting in the third row has definitely changed things. All the things I thought I hated about hockey – the violence, the fighting, the slamming each other into walls – they were what I found most exciting on Friday (there was only a small fight, but not bad for an exhibition game). I sat so close, you guys. Every time players body checked each other against the wall the glass would deflect so much that I thought it would hit me. I witnessed two goals right in front of my eyes. The speed, passing accuracy, and athleticism was incredible. All those times I rolled my eyes when my girlfriends said that hockey players are hot, well, I take that back, my sample size was small. I never ever thought I would say this, but I think I’m a hockey fan now?! Say whaaaat! Check my temperature! What sports, if any, do you follow?
For today’s look I’m wearing a pencil skirt with a sweater, and while this may be a standard pairing there’s one element that makes it very unique. I’ve been buying pencil skirts for as long as I’ve been working in different colours, patterns, and fabrics, but they’ve all been the same length, hitting just above the knee. This pencil skirt – the J. Crew Telegraph pencil skirt – is longer and hits just below the knee. I thought skirts that end below the knee would be a recipe for looking stunted, but it doesn’t make me look short at all. This pencil skirt was a game changer for me for several reasons. One, I don’t have to worry about my skirt riding up my legs when I sit down. Two, the increased coverage looks really chic and accentuates the figure more than shorter skirts. Three, it’s a modern nod to 60s pencil skirts styles; I love how women dressed back then. I’ve learned that the key to wearing skirts falling below the knee, including the popular midi style, is to make sure it’s clear where your waist is by tucking shirts inside the skirt and by making sure it fits well at the waist. I like to wear it with a pair of black pumps.
Do you wear longer pencil skirts? What do you pair with them?
