A big thanks to my little brother for taking these photos for my “crazy blog” as he likes to call it. We took them near our apartment in front of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, which I found out afterwards is the largest cathedral in the world (what!).
One of our inside jokes during the trip was the subject of taking the subway to Newark airport for our return flight. My brother would ask, “Want to take the subway to the airport?” at the most random times and I would say, “I don’t know! Maybe! I can’t decide!” and he would go, “I think we should take the subway!”. We took a taxi from JFK to Manhattan the morning we arrived after much consideration* but he insisted that we take the subway to Newark on the way back. Ever since he was little he loved public transit. I’m really not sure how we can be related. On our last day, due to visibility issues at Top of the Rock, we were running very behind and on the way back uptown to get our luggage from our apartment I scanned a few forums online and decided it was too risky to take a taxi to New Jersey during rush hour traffic. I prayed that it wouldn’t be a stressful trip. My brother was excited of course (his wish came true!) and during our ride to the airport I discovered what a natural he is at traveling. He is so strong! He actually helped me with my luggage. He was like my little big brother. Everything was smooth and the New Jersey train was fun. My brother is so easy-going and so low maintenance. He’s totally going to backpack around the world one day.
*I wanted to take the subway because it’s so convenient in New York but I made a vow in Paris to always take a taxi when I have luggage. Also, I have no experience taking the subway out of a New York airport and I was responsible for someone else on this trip I decided to go with the less stressful option.
Some other things my brother said in New York:
“I hope you pick an Instagram filter by tomorrow morning!” – on his way to bed at night
“Hey, do you want take a photo of this?” – for the most mundane things ever. As you can see he likes to make fun of my Instagram addiction.
“YOU CAN’T TELL ME WHAT TO DO!” – After reading in either Frommer’s or Eyewitness Travel that it’s not advisable to eat more than two hot dogs at Gray’s Papaya at one time no matter how much you might want to.
“Ahhhhhh you always spray me in my left eye!” – I thought it was funny to spray him with my new facial spray when he didn’t expect it but apparently I would spray him straight in his left eye every time. Haha.
“There should be a law that says you have to buy a hot dog every time you see a hot dog stand.” – That would be like 20 hot dogs a day!
“I had to brush my teeth really carefully and it was SO BORING” – phone conversation with our Mom.
“This looks just like [our neighborhood] library” – about the New York Public Library. No it doesn’t.
“I don’t know, they’re all mixed together.” – when I asked him how he separated his dirty clothes from his clean clothes.
