Greetings, 你好, from China!
I happened to arrive during the week long celebration of National Day (国庆节), which was unplanned but great because it meant all of my relatives were off work. I‘ve been here less than a week but I’ve experienced so much that it feels like a lot longer.
The best part and main part is no doubt reuniting with my family. Bonuses include:
– Amazing food at every single meal. I posted a photo of my breakfast on Instagram. I should have waited, because the next morning my aunt served everything in the photo plus crab. Yup, crab. I had two fresh crab that were alive just half an hour earlier.
– Driving! I had the unique/exciting/terrifying experience of driving in China. I stopped at a pedestrian crosswalk that had a large number of pedestrians who were almost stepping in my lane, and instead of crossing they just stood there staring at me while the car behind me honked. Rookie foreign driver mistake! It was manageable for the most part but going around a 4-lane roundabout was very stressful. It was such a mess. Driving once was enough for me!
– I’m happy to say that my Mandarin has already improved a lot since arriving. I’ve recovered a lot of lost vocabulary. Full language immersion is the only way to go. However, I still struggle with texting in Chinese. Let’s just say I text at the speed of a much much older person.
– Catching up on my sleep. My schedule has been packed over here but I’ve made it a priority to get enough sleep. I’ve woken up naturally every morning after getting a full night’s sleep every night. It feels amazing. I highly recommend it.
– Listening to Jay Chou while driving with my cousin. Jay Chou will always be my #1 favourite singer-songwriter.
