I’m a big fan of using oils to moisturize my skin and I’ve been loving the oil-based facial serums from Original Human Co. Originating from South Africa and based in Calgary, Canada, the mother-and-daughter duo behind Original Human Co. created four serums using plant-based ingredients from southern Africa that address different skin concerns. Each of the four formulas feature one feature oil: Mongongo for aging skin, Kalahari Melon for acne-prone and combination skin, Marula for dry skin, and Baobab for sensitive skin. I’ve been using two of the four serums in the line: the Marula Facial Serum and Kalahari Facial Serum.
I started using the Marula Facial Serum last summer when I was moving and it’s still the one I reach for the most and the one I pack for trips to northern BC. It’s been a dry fall and winter in Vancouver and the richness of this serum is the perfect antidote. It contains an awesome mixture of oils: marula oil, apricot, avocado, lavender, and Namibian myrrh, plus vitamin E on top of that. Original Human describes it as “perfect for those looking to improve moisture levels and restore balance to dry skin, minus a greasy feel. Vitamins and essential fatty acids sooth inflammation and reduce redness while the lightweight texture means that the serum reaches the deeper layers of the skin.” It’s meant to be massaged into your skin as one of the last steps of your skincare routine (though I often forget and put it on right after cleansing). I love how easily it absorbs, and how nourished, soft, and plump and balanced it makes my skin look.
The Kalahari Melon Facial Serum is awesome for balancing the skin and balancing sebum production. It aims to calm inflammation and promote skin cell growth for acne-prone or combination skin. Back when I had terrible acne, I used to think that using harsh cleansers and avoiding anything oil-based was the key to clearing up my skin. How wrong I was! I’m so glad I know better now. Oils help to strengthen your skin, making it better at healing itself and minimizing scarring. I love the Kalahari Melon Facial Serum during the day or when I need a drop or two of a lightweight oil. This is the one I recommended to my boyfriend to use because he gets razor bumps and breakouts on his neck.
I highly recommend giving the Original Human Co line of facial serums a try. There’s a Mongongo Facial Serum (for aging skin), Kalahari Melon Facial Serum (for acne-prone and combination skin), Marula Facial Serum (for dry skin), and Baobab Facial Serum (for sensitive skin). You can also buy a discovery pack of four sample sized serums.
