In honour of Mother’s Day, I want to share the 5 things I learned about beauty from my Korean mom. She has a simple, low maintenance and holistic approach to beauty. Her advice has stuck with me through the years and I think of them often.
- Go to bed early. I hear this one from her a lot. Not only is my mother an advocate of getting enough sleep, but both she and my father constantly reminded me that it was important to sleep early. According to Chinese Medicine, our organs repair themselves at different times of the night, starting at 10:30pm. When we sleep late, certain organs don’t get to go through the repair process. They advocated sleeping early for healthy looking skin, a sharp mind, and anti-aging. You can probably guess that I was a night owl growing up and it drove my parents crazy! My mom will be happy to know that I go to bed a lot earlier now.
2. Eat a variety of healthy foods. There’s a new superfood trend every year. There’s kale, salmon, chia, matcha, blueberries, flax seed, avocado, etc. What’s the latest thing right now? Maca root? Kombucha? My mom reminds me that it’s not about loading up the superfood-of-the-moment, but rather a variety of healthy ones. Just because kale is great doesn’t mean we should eat it all the time. Our bodies need a variety of nutrients and in nature the types of vegetables that are available vary by season. She makes a green smoothie every day and rotates a variety of nutrient packed ingredients like nuts, green veggies, homemade yogurt, goji berries, various seeds, and fruits. They’re rich and yummy!
3. Everyone has a beautiful smile. My mother always told me that I have a pretty smile, even pre-braces when I had very crooked teeth and did not feel like I had a very pretty smile. On the other hand, she liked to point out that I look terrible when I’m angry. Ok, noted LOL. She says people look their worst when they’re angry, but that everyone looks great when they smile. Everybody has a beautiful smile. So: smile!
4. Who you are on the inside shows up on the outside. My mom is a big advocate of inner beauty. When we’re stressed out, it’s pretty obvious to the people around us. If we’re weighed down by anger, stress, and bitterness, so much of it manifests physically. My mom is a huge proponent of working on your inner life so that you can live unburdened by negative emotions. And it really does show through your face. When people are mentally healthy and feel joy, happiness, and peace on the inside, it can’t help but shine through their face on the outside and through all of their interactions with other people. I think my mom is the most beautiful woman inside and out.
5. Take care of your skin. My mom doesn’t wear makeup except lipstick (we’re both wearing Buxom Lightweight Liquid Lipstick in Devious Dolly) but she loves skincare. She’s been putting on egg white masks and avocado masks (and scaring me when she’s wearing them) since I was little (she’s Korean after all). She believes healthy skin is beautiful skin. She loves Racinne’s Youth Power Anti Aging Cream and Anti Aging Neck Emulsion, which contain powerful anti-aging peptides and key active ingredients such as Korean red (panax) ginseng callus extract. She loves that they provide long lasting hydration that lasts throughout the day, whereas other creams she’s tried tend to lose their effectiveness by mid-afternoon. She’s obsessed with the Racinne Lady S Home Spa device, which has been a game changer for her skincare routine. She uses it with the Racinne Anti Aging Serum on “Spa Mode”, which uses 42 deg C heat, micro-current therapy, micro vibration therapy, red light therapy, and iontophoresis to boost collagen synthesis, stimulate blood circulation, reduce fine lines, and improve absorption of skincare products. I’ve tried it and it feels SO nice. It’s literally a high-end spa treatment at home. Her laugh lines visibly softened and her pores look tighter after just the first use. She likes it so much she uses it every day and she even took it with her in her purse so she can use it when she knows she has to wait for a period of time.

What a wonderful post, Jenny! It’s really fun to hear your mother’s advice – love that she has been doing masks at home your whole life. Thinking back on what my mother taught me about beauty…a lot. She taught me to be consistent. To wash my face every night with special soap and moisturize. She also taught me about eating well – we used to have nutritional yeast in our oj for breakfast – and about diverse food sources. You know i love going to bed early most nights, so glad to have this added amo for my case from your mom! : )
XOXO,
Catherine
