When I was in high school and university I owned a lot of lip glosses, and whenever someone got a new MAC or Bobbi Brown lip gloss we’d all pass it around to try. Looking back I realize that 1) we were really unhygienic and 2) had lots of disposable income. I never considered lipstick because glosses were all the rage and because I read an interview somewhere where the celebrity being interviewed said that lipstick “aged” a person so she only wore lip gloss. After that I was like, oh God, lipstick is for old people, I’m never wearing lipstick, ever. Well, the statement about lipstick aging people is, as Dwight Schrute would say, FALSE. Sun damage ages people. Stress ages people. Lipstick – maybe super drying ones in unflattering colours can make you look older, but that’s easily avoidable. One of my mom’s best friends started giving me Lancôme lipstick for Christmas during university (and still does every year) and has a knack for picking really great colours. I started wearing what she gave me and bought some tinted lip balms (aka gateway lipsticks) on my own. From there I started wearing lipsticks in sheer and nude colors then started experimenting with more pigmented colours that packed a punch. Now lipsticks make up the majority of the lip products I own and I want to tell you about four of them that I love and recommend.
See what lipsticks Erica, Anna, Gabriela, and Yumi love to wear
1. CLINIQUE Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Color Balm – Chunky Cherry (buy at Sephora | Nordstrom | The Bay)
I don’t use any Clinique products and would have never tried this if a coworker didn’t give it to me, but now it’s a staple in my makeup bag. It’s super moisturizing and delivers more colour and shine than you’d expect.
2. CHANEL Rouge Coco Shine – Antigone (buy at Nordstrom | Bloomingdales)
Chanel Rouge Coco Shine lipsticks are my favourite lipsticks. The colours are sheer, moisturizing, and just pigmented enough to give you that put-together look and great smile. They’re great for the office. I wear Bonheur and Antigone.
3. BURBERRY Lip Cover – Primrose Hill Pink (buy at Nordstrom | Burberry | Saks Fifth Avenue)
A lovely pink that brightens my whole face. I’m not going to lie, the packaging is pretty great too.
4. Estée Lauder Signature Lipstick – Rich Red (buy at Nordstrom | Lord & Taylor | The Bay)
A rich, sexy, glamorous, Hollywood red. I bought Estée Lauder’s Signature lipstick in Rich Red on Jen‘s recommendation. It’s a fantastic red for Asian skin tones. A pigmented lipstick like this one requires precision and lining – I use MAC lip pencil in Brick to line my lips before applying the lipstick either with a lip brush or straight from the tube. Then I blot and apply a little lipstick over my lips again. I might go over some spots with lip pencil again as well. A rich lipstick colour can highlight dryness, so make your lips soft by exfoliating and by wearing a rich lip balm to bed the night before.
